At the end of last year, I decided to learn a little more about the “typical” owner of a consignment, thrift or resale shop. In order to build a resale shop owner persona, I sent out 12 questions over a 6 week period. They ranged from “Where do you live?” to “Where are you in your family birth order?” Here are the results of my very unscientific survey. See where you fall in the “typical” resale shop owner range. Thanks to all of you who took the time to answer too.
So, where do you fall as the “typical” resale shop owner? It didn’t surprise me that over 80% of those who responded were females or that almost half are “morning” people. I was taken aback by the fact that over 70% of the respondents were empty nesters though. That could mean 2 things. First, perhaps you’ve been in the business so long, your children are now grown and gone. Or second, once the responsibility of raising your family was done, you looked for something new to keep you busy. I also thought there would be one clear age group that defined the “typical” resale shop owner, but literally the Boomers and Gen X were neck and neck. It shows that resale is here with us to stay.
My conclusion from the survey is the “typical” resale shop owner is definitely a Type A person. You rise early and are raring to go. You’re the oldest in your family which makes you ambitious, competitive and persistent. You are smart, stable and of an age where you understand the responsibility you’ve taken on.
Once again, thanks for participating in my very unscientific survey to find the “typical” resale shop owner. I enjoyed getting to know you a little better.
