Consignment stores can celebrate! July is your month!

June 27, 2019

Okay, so July isn’t really your month, but you can steal it!

The retail industry has some mighty big bucks behind it. In fact, there’s a whole month designed to honor independent retailers! They even have their own hashtag, for gosh sake. I say, “Fight Back!” Take advantage of the focus on shopping local. Ride the coattails of independent retailers and let our communities know resale is part of the independent movement too. Consignment stores can celebrate and here’s how.

Consignment stores can celebrate Independent Retailer Month too!

Sweet independence

July is perfect. As we celebrate our independence as a nation, consignment stores can celebrate your neighborhood’s independence from big box stores. Remind shoppers that when they support a local independent store, they’re helping their neighbors. The money spent stays in the community.

It also doesn’t hurt that July is one of the dreaded “J” months. Sales slow down and shoppers go on vacation. You’re looking for a reason to bring them in. In addition to reading 5 hot ideas to boost summer sales, add in a few of the shop local ideas I stole from the Indie Retailer Month website. Shhh, don’t tell anyone.

  • Host a happy hour with red, white and blue cookies or cupcakes, or partner with a local independent restaurant for some delicious treats.
  • Create buttons or badges for your salespeople that say “Proud to be Independent” or “Thanks for Shopping Local.”
  • Run a contest. One lucky winner and friends win a private shopping party (with snacks of course).
  • Collaborate with other independent stores in your neighborhood to host a special shopping day.

I came up with this one on my own…Saturday, July 27 is “Take Your Pants For A Walk Day.” Put every pair of shorts and pants on sale and see them walk out the door.

That hometown feel

The beauty of independent retailers/resalers is the ability to become that place where “everybody knows your name.” Build relationships with your customers. Acknowledge them personally. Go out of your way to offer charity events for your community. Join your local Chamber of Commerce. Your strength is your connection to the people around you. Create a sense of loyalty.┬áRemind your customers how important they are to your success. Create a spirit of supporting one another.┬áMake every visit to your store warm and memorable for shoppers. It’s the only way to survive.

National Resale Marketing firm

As resale grows, I’ve thought about the need for pooling our resources and creating our own month, national promotions or event. Yes, there’s National Thrift Shop Day on Saturday, August 17, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Resale is going mainstream and it’s time we band together. NARTS (National Association for Resale and Thrift Shops) is wonderful for educating and encouraging those in the industry. However, we need one central organization that does nothing but promote the benefits of independent resale/consignment stores to consumers. Earlier in the year, I proposed that every consignment/thrift and resale shop should use the hashtag #ShopGreen19. There’s only 6 months left. Who’s with me?
