Consignment: Four Myths and Why They’re Not True
February 23, 2021
There are many myths about consignment and we’ve all heard them. Unfortunately, consignment and thrifting get clumped together when they’re truly quite different. Here are four myths and why they’re not true.
Myth #1 consignment items aren’t in the best conditions
I believe this confusion comes from the fine line between consigning and thrifting. However, this is a total myth, not only are consignment clothes in great condition, you can even find many new pieces. Consignment stores aim to provide their community with clothing that represents their store well. The same goes for furniture at consignment stores. Although you may find items that are outdated or not your style they will all still be in good condition.
Myth #2 consignment items aren’t attractive
The fun thing about consignment is that there is no specific style. Unlike the stores at the mall which may have specific styles, consignment stores have a little bit of everything. People get rid of even their prettiest items, whether it’s clothing or furniture. You are likely to find something you love when shopping consignment because of the wide range of options.
Myth #3 consignment stores are messy
Every shop has its own form of organization, typically consignment stores are categorized by the type of piece and by color. This makes it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. It is a lot to look through if you aren’t looking for anything specific, but that just means there’s a lot of variety. Who can be mad at that? If you are at a consignment store and you don’t understand the organization, grab someone who works there and they will walk you through their method. This is another myth that comes from the confusion between thrift and consignment stores. Consignment store owners put a lot of effort into making their job feel like a regular boutique to give you the best customer experience.
Myth #4 consignment stores don’t have high-end or luxury products
While consignment stores do carry high-end products, these are always the first to sell. This means you have to get to know your local consignment stores. Follow them on social media and learn about their schedule. Knowing when they get new items in will allow you to be ahead of the game. There are also consignment shops that focus on high-end products, if there aren’t any in your area there are definitely some high-end consignment shops online such as The RealReal.
